Easy Steps for Redecorating your Living Room

Get a Plan - Decide what pieces you want to keep and those you do not and then measure your space. Measuring everything; the floor space, walls, windows and furniture. Measuring everything helps to place furniture, rugs, and other accessories. This will also help if you need to purchase other pieces of furniture. Keep in mind the scale, balance and space.

Set your budget - It is important to have a budget. Having a budget does not mean you are cheap, it just means you have boundaries. An informed consumer can maximize their decorating dollars by shopping wisely. Beware of impulse buying.

Inspiration piece - Fresh fabric is a great way to update a room. This could be mean new pillows, draperies or a rug. An inspiration piece can also be a form of artwork.

Color - Paint can change your room entirely. This is when you need to consider the 60-30-10 rule. You want your dominant color, which is sixty percent of your color to be on your walls. Your upholstery will be thirty percent of your color, which is your secondary color and the remaining ten percent needs to be in your accent pieces. Accent pieces can be pillows, accessories or a floral arrangement.

Assess your windows - How current are they? Do you need to control light, safety or need to soften hard angels? Layered window treatments can help with energy efficiency. An example is that they help keep your heat and air conditioning in and keep harmful UV rays off your furniture and hardwood floors. Simple panels can also add interest and soften lines.

Accessories - Accessories pull everything together. This is where you can add your own personal touch that turns a house into a home. An example would be personal collections, photos, pillows, rugs, wall art, and books are one of my favorite decorative touches. Books are great to create interest, they can be placed in bookcases, stacked to bring lamps to the correct height. With books the list of possibilities is endless.

Remember, art, such as oil paintings, is personal and it does not have to match the sofa. Always buy art because you love it.

Candles should be in every room for added interest, fragrance and light when the power goes out. Sometimes the little things you do can make a room more comfortable.

Once everything listed above has been considered, it is finally time to get started.

Mixing pieces of furniture adds interest. Sometimes a sideboard looks great as a TV stand and a small desk can be a great sofa table with a cute chair.

Avoid buying a total concept of furniture Your sofa, loveseat, club chair, coffee table, sofa table, and med table do not all have to match. Ottomans can make great coffee tables when a tray is added to it. Another option is a storage bench because they can easily store blankets, toys, and magazines.

Remember; have fun making your house your home. Make it comfortable and accommodating to your lifestyle. Always buy things you love.
